March Then and Now

Lessons of March

In the “Women’s Month” of March, we recall some significant women’s work.

The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal (“For Church and Pope”) is the highest papal honor given to the laity.  It is conferred for distinguished service and witness to the faith. Six of our Sisters have received this:

Sister Perpetua McCarthy
Sister Maureen Hennessy
Sister John Marie Samaha
Sister Marie Ann Brent
Sister Monica Kennedy
Sister Angela Marie Hinckley

But not all are in the public eye. Sister Malachy Hannigan, born in Ireland, spent most of her 104-year-long life as a terrific baker in the kitchens of the Community. In honor of sister, and of St. Patrick’s Day, we offer her Irish soda bread recipe.
